Content Notification for Wordpress

Subscribing to blogs via email is handy, especially for those of us who prefer to use an email client instead of an RSS reader. It’s also using to help us all become aware that a site has new content.

Recently one of our clients told us that they needed a plugin that can send their blog posts out in email. There are a couple of plugins that can provide that functionality, but each one can only send out email when a new post is published, which might overload readers if you post new content frequently. None of the existing plugins provide a way to send out weekly digests. So we solved that problem with our Content Notification plugin.

Content Notification is based on an existing plugin, Post Notification. We expanded the capabilities to support weekly digests, added support for new email templates, support to let readers choose whether to receive email in plain text or HTML format, and support to more easily integrate a subscription form into a post, a page, or in your sidebar. So now you can send out a weekly digest of all your new posts. Of course you can also use the plugin to send out notices immediately when you add new posts or pages, but the weekly digest ability is the really unique thing about this plugiin.

To use the plugin’s digest mode, you configure which day and hour to send the digest (for example, Monday at 8am), select which templates to use, and configure a few other settings all through the Wordpress admin interface. You can either add a subscription for to your site by inserting a template tag into a post or your sidebar, or by creating a page for that purpose using our custom page template which was designed specifically for this plugin.

Readers then subscribe using a double opt-in method. First they must enter an email address. The plugin sends them a message with a link that they must visit to confirm their subscription. After subscribing they can then select which post categories they want to subscribe to – all or only a partial selection.
