Buddypress Chat Plugin
Here’s what the Buddypress Chat plugin offers your site:
- Any user with an account can login and chat with other users that are online.
- Each user can mark themselves as available or unavailable for chat
- A new Chat menu item appears in the My Account menu of the navigation bar.
- The menu takes users to a page where they can view who is currently available for chat.
- The plugin checks the database to see which users were recently active. So when a user drops out of that list for inactivity then they no longer appear in the list of available users for chat until they become active on your site again.
- Chatting with a user produces a small chat box at the bottom of the screen that stays in place even if someone scrolls the screen. Chat conversation is preserved across different pages on your site, so conversions are not interrupted while someone surfs various pages on your site
Upcoming features will include:
- Chat history
- Optional chat window layouts
This plugin is currently in development although you can test it right now on this site. So if you’ve got wishlist items for it then speak up quick!
Is the chat in the wrong place? Should it be in a popup window? Longer horizontal bar at the bottom? What?

I think a chat bar with a list of online users would be good at the bottom of the screen, it’s cumbersome to have to go to a page to find out who you can chat with.

Availability can be controlled with a little green or red circle in the bottom bar that says “Available” or “Offline” next to it. You can click that circle to change your status. Also, I think it is safe to assume that most people will want to be available by default. Great plugin, looking forward to the release.

Any chance of being able to set a smaller chat window by default? Seems to take up a lot of screen real estate….love the fact it follows me around though..
And how about group chats? Such as inviting all members of a certain bp group to join a chat… In fact, the possibility to have multiple chat partners at the same time by invite only would be great nonetheless…keep up the great work, really impressed so far

I’ll be adding a way for people to size the chat box plus drag it around to somewhere else on the screen. I got that base functionality in place today but it’s disable if your not admin because it’s buggy.
Group chat is being developed right now

This looks great.
But when is a good time to actually have people around to test it with?
Anyway, I guess I should be checking throughout the day to see if anyone will be online.

It looks impressive. Having multiple people in a chat is a great feature. How about outputting the chat to a file or blog or forum post to be able to keep a record if you would like.
