BuddyPress is a cool platform – the latest version as of this writing is v1.2.2.1. Cool as it is, it’s still missing some features that a lot of people think are mandatory.

For example, there are no privacy settings for user profile information. So anything you put in your profile will be viewable by everyone. And that’s not always a good thing.

Sandra Petronic wrote a nice plugin for BuddyPress that introduces privacy settings for user profile data. It works by putting a series of radio buttons under search profile field when a user is editing their profile. The buttons let you make each element of your profile viewable to everyone, just your friends, or only you. But, her plugin doesn’t work with the BuddyPress 1.2.

So we took the GPL code and modified it to work with BuddyPress 1.2.x, plus added three new features – the ability to display a dropdown box (similar to Facebook’s privacy settings); the ability to set profile data so that only logged in users can view it, AND we made the plugin work automatically. With Sandra’s version you had to edit a core BuddyPress file plus modify your theme too. Not anymore. Our version eliminates those problems.

Since we made these changes we decided to rename the original plugin to avoid any possible confusion. This version is called Simple Buddypress Profile Privacy.
